Basic Info
Name:Yagami Light (OU)
Bio
This is a role-playing journal for [info]econtra_rpg by [info]setsuna. Death Note © Tsugumi Ohba and Takeshi Obata. All content is fictional and for entertainment purposes only, not for profit.

Character: Light Yagami, with a secret identity as Kira
Series/Fandom: Death Note
Original or Alternate: Original
Age: ~19
Gender: Male
Species: Human
Sexuality: Pretends to be straight, but mentally asexual

Appearance:
He’s neat, clean, and straight-laced. He stands out by being such a perfect prototype for the idealized conventional. The artful sweep of his carefully styled, auburnish hair is both on the constant verge of obstructing his vision and of shielding his own eyes from others’ view. Most of his clothes are conservative: tailored and flattering, but muted and nondescript. Other than that, he is a tall, lean, chiseled heartbreaker.

Personality:
Light has two faces: a public one and a private one.
His public face is cool, calm, and very serious. He never jokes, rarely smiles, and only very seldom shows anger. He is responsible, courteous, thoughtful, caring and righteous.
His private face, however, can careen from calm and collected to deliriously wild. He cackles and rages, particularly when engaged with particular opponents. This side of him is arrogant, judgmental (ha, ha), vindictive and ruthless.
His stickwithitness is second to none. If he finds abilities rivaling his own in others, his reaction is welcoming if the person is useful to him, but if the person directly threatens him, he channels all his resources to defeat him or her and preserve himself.
Uniting his private and public sides are a few traits he does not hide from the people around him: his tenacity, his confidence, and above all, his analytical and strategic competence. As a rule, he is almost genuinely a “nice boy” to most people, if a little distant – harmless and courteous, so long as they stay out of his ideological crossfire and do not, directly or via implication, threaten his plans or his life.
It is important to note that if Light chooses to renounce his memories of using a particular supernatural item, then his personality "reverts" to one of guileless, complete innocence. In short, he will truly and genuinely become the pure, good, honest, upstanding citizen he pretends to be while still "under the influence"...

Abilities/Weapons:
Light plays tennis, is a decent all-round athlete and able to hold his own in a conventional unarmed fight. He has a powerful network, and is privy to a lot of very confidential insider information about world law enforcement, particularly in the search for a particular criminal. He also is a skilled hacker. That aside, he has three “powers” in his arsenal.
The first, as mentioned, is his combined analytical and strategic competence. He is a savvy judge of (all but his own) character and is a sophisticated tactician, even under emotional and time pressure.
Secondly, he appears suave, social, and is summarily an excellent (though imperfect) actor. He cannot fool everyone all of the time, but he can certainly fool the vast majority of people the vast majority of the time… time and time and time again.
Finally, he owns a supernatural notebook with unlimited pages. If he knows the face and correct name of anyone at any time, anywhere, he can use the notebook to kill that person long-distance, with no conventional evidence at all to link him to the murder.

Weaknesses:
Light has delusions of grandeur. Public posturing aside, he honestly thinks he is a living god. He will not tolerate anyone challenging his authority to remake his world in the way he sees fit (with whatever means he sees fit). If a detractor does manage to stir him into a rage, he is prone to doing rash and stupid things. He has come uncomfortably close to paying very dearly for this in the past and so works to stay calm in such situations; however, his inherent arrogance remains.
He has a history at home that, if convincingly attributed to him, will likely lead to his execution.
This same secret history, while grotesque by almost universal standards, is part of his private “human cleansing” effort of the world. His weakness here is that he really and truly believes in his “chosen work” – who knows what would become of him if it could be proven to him it really and truly is all inhuman and in vain?

History:
Idle minds are a devil’s playground.
Ryuk is a shinigami (god of death). Light is a student who tops the academic charts with ease. Both are mind-numbingly bored. Both think the human world is corrupt and rotten. When Ryuk happens to drop his notebook of death (the “Death Note”) and Light happens to pick it up, though – the roller coaster begins.
Light tests the notebook, but instead of renouncing it, decides to use it as part of a personal crusade to rid the world of criminals, scare potential criminals, and hence rid the world of evil. He thinks he’s the only person strong enough and honest enough to pull it off. For his part, Ryuk tags along for the impartial amusement of watching Light try to implement his plans.
However, as criminals die at an unnatural pace, the world’s leading detective, “L,” decides this is his kind of case, agrees to take it on, and commits to cracking it at all costs. At the same time, Light’s actions earn him a base of fans who call him “Kira,” and believe he is the defender of those oppressed under a weak law enforcement system.
For his part, Light rashly overreacts to some of L’s taunts, kills a decoy, and compromises some of his anonymity. When Light gets wind that he’s being tracked by said law enforcement system, he falls further, killing the good-guy FBI agents sent to catch him. As Light’s victims grow to include innocents killed to protect his own skin, his own humanity deteriorates further and further.
The stakes are high. If L catches Light, Light will be executed by the state for being a murderous vigilante. However, if Light can get L’s full name and face, he will kill L for threatening his plans.
It happens that Light’s father, the chief of police, allies with L in catching Kira. Light negotiates his way into the Kira investigation team and meets L face-to-face. Alas for Light, he can’t find L’s name…
Suddenly, a “second Kira” appears. Misa Amane is a hopelessly devoted Kira fangirl who independently came across her own Death Note. Misa has the ability to see a person’s true name by looking at their faces – an ability Light needs. He reveals himself to her, and they strike up a bizarre relationship. In exchange for her assistance, he agrees to (pretend to) be her boyfriend.
However, L is no slouch. Before Misa can tell Light L’s name, she is arrested by L and put under constant watch. Under extreme stress, Misa ends up giving up her Death Note, her memories, and her “shinigami eyes”.
Light, for his part, is still determined to kill L, but feels cornered. He concocts a long-range plan that depends on three facts:
  1. If he renounces his memory of using the Note, he will not incriminate himself.
  2. If a third party is given the notebook, Light will want to discover the identity of this third party killer because he will want to clear his name (L constantly suspects Light).
  3. If Misa is put in a position where L expects to convict her of being the second Kira (and therefore get the death sentence for her), Misa’s guardian shinigami, Rem, will kill L.
By temporarily renouncing the notebook (and by convincing Ryuk to mislead investigators with a false rule), Light ends up revealing the existence and properties of the notebook to the rest of the team, but succeeds in convincing all but L of his innocence once and for all.
By convincing Misa to begin killing people with an extra notebook the moment she is released, L becomes the only one to think the so-called “coincidence” is nonsense. Should L convict Misa, she will die; thus, just as L is about to enact a plan that would prove her guilt, Rem kills him.
Light, for his part, puts on a magnificent show of shock and rage at L’s death.
It is after this that Light is sucked into Econtra…
